Clifford Derix

 

Clifford Derix, bass-baritone, has appeared in concert works and operatic roles throughout the United States and Europe. Mr. Derix created the roles of the Lawyer and Second Judge in Houston Grand Opera's world premiere of Tod Machover's Resurrection. A few of his many operatic roles include Don Magnifico (La Cenerentola), il sagrestano (Tosca), Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Zuniga (Carmen), Germont and Grenvil (La Traviata), the title roles of Don Pasquale and Gianni Schicchi, plus the roles of Don Alfonso and Guglielmo in Mozart's Cosi fan tutte.

He has performed in operetta as the Pirate King (The Pirates of Penzance) and Pooh-Bah (The Mikado) and also has many musical theatre credits, including Alfred P. Doolittle (My Fair Lady), Sir Harry (Once Upon a Mattress), Miles Gloriosus (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum) and Jupiter in Cole Porter's Out of this World.

Equally at home on the concert stage, Mr. Derix has also appeared as soloist in such works as Handel's Messiah, Bach's St. John Passion, Brahms' Ein deutches Requiem, Faure's Requiem, Beethoven's Mass in C, the DuBois Seven Last Words of Christ, and as Raphael and Adam in Haydn's The Creation with Houston Masterworks and the Beaufort Symphony.

He has been recorded for NPR with The Black Hills Symphony and toured Great Britain as a soloist with Chorus Angelorurn. Mr. Derix' recent engagements in Charleston include being baritone soloist in the rarely performed Epithalamion (Vaughan Williams), performing the title role in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, and appearing as bass soloist with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra in Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610.
