JeeYoon Choi

 

JeeYoon Choi, a native of South Korea, is the Director of Music and Organist at the First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, Charleston, South Carolina.  She began studying organ with HeeSung Kim at the Ewha Women’s University in Seoul, and holds a D.M.A. from Boston University, studying under James David Christie, and a M.M. from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, studying under Stefan Engels.

In October 2006, Dr. Choi was a guest speaker for the annual Karg-Elert conference held in Leipzig, Germany, presenting “Karg-Elert’s Use of Lutheran Chorale and Gregorian Chant in His Organ Music.”  Also, her article on the same topic was published by The Karg-Elert Arhchive, Londonin September 2006.

Her most recent accomplishments include First Prize in the 2004 Elizabeth Elftman Organ Competition, and First Prize in the 2001 Strader Organ Competition.  She was also selected as the recipient of The Peter B. Knock Memorial Music Award of 2004.

Dr. Choi has given recitals in the L’Organo Series at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, and at the following places: the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Milwaukee; the Church of the Immaculate Conception at the Jesuit Urban Center in Boston; Adolph Busch Hall at Harvard University; the Church of the Advent, King’s Chapel, Boston; Marsh Chapel, Boston; the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, New York City; the Central Congregational Church, Newtonville MA; the AIDS Benefit Recital at All Saints’ Church, in Millington, NJ; St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Trenton, NJ; Christ Church Cathedral, in Cincinnati; and at Westminster Choir College for the 2001 Commencement.  She is planning a series of organ recitals in Charleston, New York City, and Germany for the 2008-2009 seasons.

Dr. Choi has served as Director of Music at several churches in New Jersey and in the Boston area, and has also taught organ at Boston University; she served as a pianist for the University Chorale at Boston College.
